Champions visit Tunbridge Wells

    Calverley Grounds Tunbridge Wells

Six Olympic heroes visited Tunbridge Wells last Wednesday [August 24] to rapturous applause as they posed for the crowd of well-wishers who gathered in Calverley Grounds to greet them.

Standing atop a London double decker bus, the Olympians, all of whom live in either Kent or Sussex, waved at the families and inspired youngsters as they went live on BBC South East Today news.

The stars included members of Team GB’s women’s Gold medal-winning hockey team, Susannah Townsend, Sophie Bray and Laura Unsworth; Tom Ransley, who won gold in the rowing men’s eight; Steve Scott, the winner of a bronze in shooting double trap, and Tom Mitchell, who won silver in the rugby sevens.

The visit came shortly after their return from the Games in Rio, Brazil, where Great Britain won 76 medals, including 27 gold – its highest ever medal score at an away Olympics.
