Kent County Council is due to save taxpayers up to £5.2million a year after awarding the contract to convert the county’s 118,000 street lights to energy-efficient LED technology to Bouygues Energies & Services.

Work to convert street lights to LED is due to begin in residential areas in March and will be completed within 38 months.

The project will cost a total of £40million and is being partly funded by a £22million interest-free loan from the Department of Energy and Climate Change which will pay for itself in eight years.
