Luke's story

One year on from his mother Sue’s death, Luke Jones is setting out to ensure that other terminally ill patients can enjoy the same level of supportive and compassionate care that made his mums final weeks and days so much easier to bear.

Luke will be taking part in the Hospice in the Weald 10K road run around Tunbridge Wells, which will take place on Sunday 20th September, just five days after the anniversary of Sue’s passing at Hospice in the Weald’s In-Patient Unit in Pembury.

“It is nice timing,” said Luke, 24 of Tunbridge Wells. “I’ll be remembering her and raising money to enable other patients to get the same wonderful care that my mum received. Before my mum went into the hospice, people would have taken part in charity events bringing in the money that paid for her care so I want to do the same thing and help to fund care for future patients.

“Mum spent 8 weeks at Hospice in the Weald at the end and it was just a lovely place for her to be. It was hard going to see her but the nurses are pretty amazing and our family new she was receiving the best care which did provide comfort. The situation was sad but all of the hospice staff made it cheerful. She had always been such a positive, cheerful person and the hospice made sure she could still be that way, even then. There was lots of stuff for her to do like making birthday cards and enjoying the gardens.”

The 10K is aimed at raising £50,000 towards the £7million needed each year for Hospice in the Weald to continue to provide totally free care for patients like Sue, their families and carers. The hospice’s 10K Events Coordinator Sue Latham said: “If we hit our target the money raised would fund our In-Patient Unit at Pembury for a whole week, providing 15 terminally ill patients with specialist care in an environment where they feel safe and supported.”
