Castle Colts 0 Tonbridge Angels Ladies 5
TONBRIDGE ANGELS Ladies moved up to third place in their debut season in the South East Counties League after a convincing 5-0 win away to Castle Colts.
Tonbridge were in complete control from the outset but it wasn’t until the 23rd minute that the Colts defence was breached for the first time, Megan Akehurst getting her first goal for the club in her first competitive start.
Several opportunities to increase the lead came and went, Becky Janes firing a shot over the bar then having a second effort superbly saved by Colts keeper Charlotte Brown, while Abbie Skilton hit the post.
Eventually the lead was doubled in first-half stoppage time with Janes finally getting the better of Brown with her first goal since November.
Becky Saxby calmly finished with only the keeper to beat, and two minutes later it was four, Courtney Smith making a surging run down the left and firing home on the angle.
The Angels survived a scare when a high ball struck the angle of crossbar and post, before Janes rounded proceedings off with the fifth goal ten minutes from time.
It was a first clean sheet of the season for goalkeeper Tracy Edwards. With three of the four remaining league games to be played against the two sides immediately above and below them, the race for second place is well and truly on.
But first the Ladies must turn their attention to the quarter-final of the Kent Divisional Cup this Sunday against a familiar foe, the league leaders and cup favourites Maidstone United; kick-off is at 1.30pm at K Sports, Cobdown.
